This is from an awesome writer, Dan Williams.Outstanding. Anyone teaching will surely relate to this.
I used to substitute teach. I had a shaved head. I never sat down. I marched back and forth slowly, using every muscle in my legs to make the walk menacing and powerful. I had knee pain.
I didn’t let the kids work together. I didn’t let them talk while they worked. I heard talking in a study hall once and I said, “Gentlemen,” and they shut up. Like I was a general. Like it was wartime. Did they like me? I turned around one time and caught a kid miming shooting me with a shotgun. He would have missed. Then I would have made him sit and do his homework without talking forever.
